Minister visits erosion-prone belt in Garo Hills

By Correspondent

TURA, Nov 28 - Meghalaya Water Resources Minister B Nongsiej on Friday visited the erosion-prone areas in the plain belt of West Garo Hills district, promising the local residents that the issue of flood and erosion would be discussed with the Brahmaputra Board in Guwahati, Assam, for resolution.

Nongsiej was accompanied by local MLA Dr Azad Zaman, the chief engineer, the superintending engineer and the executive engineer of the Water Resources Department.

The ministers visit came in the wake of appeals made by Dr Zaman as well as the local residents for a solution to the erosion problem that has posed a threat to their land lying along the Brahmaputra and its tributary, Jinjiram.

Many villages, including Quijani, Rajpur, Old Bhaitbari, and Gomaijhora have already lost huge tracts of land due to floods and erosion.

We are happy that the minister gave an assurance to look into the erosion issue. The situation is critical and requires immediate attention. Many people have lost their land due to the annual floods and this will continue to happen if no action is taken, said MLA Dr Zaman.
