Mindset towards women must change: Kumar

By Correspondent

DIMAPUR, July 30 The existing mindset of looking at women as the weaker section of the society has to be fought together by all, stressed Nagaland Governor Nikhil Kumar.

Speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the one-day State level seminar on Atrocities Against Women jointly organised by the Nagaland State Commission for Women (NSCW) and Department of Women Development in Kohima, Kumar said atrocities against women is a worldwide phenomenon and urged upon both men and women to stand up and fight against it.

If there is a realisation and both men and women fight togther against such atrocities, things will surely change, he said.

Particularly challenging the men to take up the responsibility and declare women as equl partners, the Governor underlined that gender equlity is the need of the hour.

He pointed out that important national and international organisations have put up a lot of efforts in bringing about greater equality between men and women in order to do away with gender discrimination. It is hurting that despite tall statements by various international leaders that they are all for equality for women, we keep hearing of women harassment sexually, economically, socially and physically and the actual ground situation remains the same, he said.

Sharing his views on the status of women in Naga society, which he had observed during his 21 months as Governor, Kumar said the position of women is very respectful as they play a key role in building their family, community, society and the State as a whole. He also appreciated young Naga women for their impressive performance in various activities outshining the men. He termed this as optimistic and felt that they would distinguish themselves in the position to stand up and brave any kind of indecent acts hurled upon them.

The Governor also appealed to the Women Commission to come up with recommendations to put forth to the State Government so that the government will take appropriate decision for the needs of the society.

Additional Chief Secretary and Commissioner Banuo Z Jamir said women must make themselves aware of the various legislations that are available to protect their rights and that they should be equipped with laws in order to fight for their rights.
