Mina Agarwala passes away

TEZPUR, July 24 � Mina Agarwala, social worker and a staunch Gandhian, passed away around 4 am today at her Parwa Chariali residence. She was 90.

Agarwala had received prestigious awards like the Amal Prabha Das Memorial Award and the Janki Devi Bajaj Award. She reconstituted the Tezpur Mahila Samiti, which was formed in 1919 under the leadership of �Agni Kanya� Chandra Prabha Saikiani and working from �Poki� (Jyoti Bharati), she had been involved in selfless service for women�s empowerment since 1946 through this platform to combat domestic violence faced by women.

She held the prestigious post of president of the Tezpur Mahila Samittee till 2004. Along with woman empowerment, she also worked for child development.

Born to Nagendra Nath Baruah and Hemlata Baruah of Tezpur on December 15, 1924, she married Kamala Prasad Agarwala, younger brother of Rupkonwar Jyotiprasad Agarwala at the age of 15. She is survived by a son and two daughters.
