Militants attack Kakopothar PS

DOOMDOOMA , Oct 1 - On the eve of the Assam Police Day, unidentified militants attacked Kakopothar PS in Tinsukia district of upper Assam at around 7:30 pm yesterday.

According to eyewitness accounts, four youths in Army fatigue came on foot and started firing indiscriminately at the police station. They also fired an RPG which fortunately did not explode. The police also retaliated. The militants, however, managed to escape. The militants took away a scooty (No. AS-23-L-5120) of one Kamal Deka of Kakopothar. They also kidnapped one Hemanga Gohain of Uban village at gunpoint. However, he was released later. No casualty has been reported.

Police suspects ULFA (I) and NSCN(K) militants� hand behind the incident. The incident has created a sensation in this small town. Police, Army and paramilitary forces have started joint operations in the area in search of the militants.
