MHA-CBI team arrives in city

GUWAHATI, Aug 9 � A team of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) comprising Joint Secretary (North East) of the MHA, Shambhu Singh, Special Director of the CBI and others arrived in the State today on a two-day visit to assess the situation before the Central agency takes over the cases relating to the ethnic clashes.

Talking to The Assam Tribune, Singh said that immediately after its arrival, the team had meetings with the senior officials of the Assam Police in the headquarters of the police and with officials of the State administration in Dispur to assess the situation.

Singh said that the team would visit Kokrajhar tomorrow morning for on the spot study of the situation before returning to New Delhi.

The MHA official said that the CBI would take over the cases relating to the ethnic clashes in Kokrajhar, Chirang and Dhubri districts immediately after the formal notification in this regard is issued by the Government of India. The role of the MHA would be facilitator to the process of handing over of the cases to the CBI and the present visit of the CBI officials is only to assess the situation on the ground.
