GUWAHATI, Feb 29 - The Gauhati University (GU) community has opposed the reported decision of the authorities concerned to lay a portion of the overhead metro rail line through the GU campus.
In a statement here today, two senior professors of the University, Abani Bhagabati and Mohan Chandra Kalita, said, on behalf of the GU community, that the GU community has totally been kept in the dark as to who took this decision for constructing this overhead metro rail line through the GU campus and where it was adopted.
Meanwhile, the newly laid National Highway 37 has taken away a portion of the GU land area. The University has a very small land area. The newly laid NH 37 has also affected the academic atmosphere of the University, they said.
Though the metro rail will bring about a revolutionary change in the public transportation system of Guwahati, if it is laid through the GU campus, it will take away another portion of the University.
This is not at all acceptable for the GU community. The GU community is shocked by this decision and urges the State government to revoke it immediately. In a recent meeting, the GU community decided to frustrate the above decision for constructing the overhead metro rail line through the GU campus at any cost, said Prof Bhagabati and Prof Kalita.
