Meghalaya Guv for better ties with SE Asia

SHILLONG, April 1 - Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan today said the Northeastern States needs to utilise its vast pool of human resource and build better ties with South East Asian countries for swift development of the region.

Inaugurating a two-day National Seminar on �Foreign Trade - A strategy for the economic growth of the North Eastern Region of India� here, Shanmuganathan said the potentialities of the educated youth in the region needs to be fully utilised.

He added trade and commerce with the South East Asian countries are essential for the economic growth of the region and therefore more efforts must be put in to expand economic ties with these neighbouring countries.

�The availability of rich pool of human resources and natural wealth needs to be properly harnessed to ensure all round development of the region,� he stated.

The Governor also hoped that the paper presentations by the experts and discussions during the seminar would suggest ways to improve foreign trade and bring about socio-economic development in the region.

The National Seminar is being organised to provide a platform for the resource persons and participants to discuss various issues on how to bring the North East at par with the rest of the country with focus on foreign trade.

The seminar was organised by Shillong Commerce College at Don Bosco Youth Centre here in collaboration with the Indian Council of Social Research, North Eastern Region and University Grant Commission.

The seminar was attended by research scholars from Gauhati University, faculty members of Shillong College and St Anthony�s College and Tura Government College.
