Meghalaya Govts talks with social bodies inconclusive

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, April 26 Meghalaya Home Minister HDR Lyngdohs meeting with social organisations today on their demand to put on hold special electoral enrolment cells didnt make much headway.

The organisations Khasi Students Union (KSU), Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and others met Lyngdoh, Minister in-charge, election, JA Lyngdoh and Chief Electoral Officer Prashant Naik and demanded that special electoral enrolment be closed at the district and subdivision levels.

The State Government argued it was following the directive of the Chief Election Commission in this regard and had no say in the matter.

The organisations after the meeting said that from Monday to Wednesday, night road blockade would be observed from 7 pm till 5 am throughout Khasi-Jaintia Hills region.

The organisations have called a two-night road blockade from 9 pm to 5 am from yesterday in protest against the alleged enrolment of D-voters in the State.

The organisations said that since Meghalaya shares a vulnerable international border prone to influxs caution should be exercised before people are enrolled in the voters list.
