Meghalaya Govt warns of stern action against hunting incidents

By STAFF correspondent

SHILLONG, May 6 - The Meghalaya Government has warned of taking stern action against those who killed a bear in an East Khasi Hills village recently. Pictures of villagers trying to burn the fur of the killed animal have surfaced on the social media. A similar picture of some persons carrying the carcass of a barking deer had earlier appeared on the social media.

According to netizens, the bear, probably an Asiatic black bear, was killed some days ago by villagers at Mawpyrthuh under Pynursla civil subdivision. Meghalaya Police said that appropriate action would be initiated against the perpetrators of the crime.

The Asiatic black bear is an endangered animal found in many Asian countries including Bangladesh, which lies on the foothills of Pynursla.

Meanwhile, the State Government has placed advertisement in local newspapers for identification of those involved in the killing of the barking deer.
