SHILLONG, Feb 2 - The Meghalaya government is confident of completing the permanent building of the State Legislative Assembly in New Shillong township in 2022.
Speaking to reporters, Public Works Department (PWD) (Buildings) Minister Comingone Ymbon said that the department is now looking to complete the construction of the Assembly building before the targeted date of completion.
Stating that the target for commissioning the project is 2023, he said, �Looking at the progress of the work, we are confident that the project will be completed in 2022.�
Ymbon said the work is progressing at a very fast pace.
Informing that the physical progress of the project is more than 30 per cent, he added that the Government is keen to complete the project at the earliest as it has a bearing on the prestige of the State.
It may be noted here that Meghalaya is the only State in the country sans a permanent Legislative Assembly building after 125-year-old structure that housed the State Assembly at Khyndailad was gutted in a fire in 2001.
Construction of the new building began on June 15 after the work order was issued to Rajkiya Nirman Nigam Ltd, an Uttar Pradesh-based public sector undertaking.
The firm has been given 30 months to complete the project at a cost of Rs 127 crore.
