SHILLONG, March 18 Meghalaya police received a severe jolt with a top official deserting its rank and joining a militant outfit.
Champion R Sangma, a Deputy Superintendent of Police has gone missing and joined the Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA), sources said.
This is the second incident of a top police official from Meghalaya joining a militant outfit. Earlier, Peter Marak, a commando with Meghalaya Police, floated the Liberation of Achik Elite Force (LAEF). Marak was later gunned down by the police in an encounter in 2007.
Today, Director General of Police SB Kakati confirmed that Sangma has been missing from duty. We have served notice on him for being absent from duty for a very long time. His salary has been stopped, Kakati said.
The DGP, however, refused to comment on his whereabouts. We are making inquiry on whether Champion Sangma has joined any militant outfit. We are awaiting report, Kakati added.
However, sources said, Sangma is now heading the GNLA and is into extortion in various parts of Garo Hills. Most of the members of GNLA are deserters from the Achik National Volunteers Council and LAEF.
Police here are uncertain about the strength of the GNLA. We are yet to assess the strength and motive of the GNLA, a police official said.
