Meghalaya Day celebrated

TURA, Jan 21 � The 41st Meghalaya Statehood Day was celebrated today with a �March for Peace and Prosperity� and an impressive function at Chandmary Playground here.

C&RD Minister Saleng A Sangma, who was the chief guest on the occasion, participated in the march along with the Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal, Chief Executive Member, GHADC, Purno K Sangma, and the public.

Addressing the gathering, Sangma reminded the people about the peaceful and non-violent way in which the State was attained by the leaders of the Hill State Movement and appealed to all sections to work concertedly for peace and development of the State.

�Let this march for peace and prosperity not end here, but reach to every nook and corner of Garo Hills and the State�, he said.

CEM, GHADC Purno K Sangma also called upon the people to be sincere and hardworking in order to build a strong and vibrant State. Former Pro-VC, NEHU Tura Campus and present Pro-VC, ICFAI, Tura, Prof Milton S Sangma highlighted the role played by the Garos in the making of Meghalaya and the Hill State Movement.

He appealed to the people to �make Meghalaya an island of peace, a patch of beauty and grace� as the Late Prof GG Swell had stated in the floor of the Parliament in New Delhi.

As part of the celebration, twenty-five sets of agro-service machineries were distributed to the beneficiaries of the district under BRGF, facilitated by the Agriculture department and funded by the DRDA, West Garo Hills.

An exhibition has also been organised at the Chandmary playground. Government departments as well as small-scale industrial units and self-help groups have set up stalls at the exhibition which will continue up to January 24 coinciding with the Tura Winter Festival.
