SHILLONG, April 15 (IANS): Amid growing dissidence in the Congress Legislature Party and demands for his ouster, Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma Friday exuded confidence that he would complete his term.
"The coalition government is going strong and there is no doubt about. We are committed to serve the people," he told journalists here.
Sangma, who is scheduled to complete one year in office April 20, is facing a revolt from 18 of his party's 28 legislators in the 60-member assembly.
The rebel Congress legislators, camping in New Delhi, are making all efforts to again bring in veteran Congress leader D.D. Lapang to replace Sangma, a Congress source said.
Lapang resigned as chief minister April 20, 2010 after 21 of the 28 Congress legislators proposed Sangma's name as the new Congress legislature party leader.
Evading a direct reply when asked if he proposed to effect a cabinet reshuffle to calm the on-going rebellion, Sangma said: "It is an internal affair of the party and anything that we discussed remains within the party and we don't share it."
Sangma is heading the five-party Congress-United Democratic Party (UDP)-led Meghalaya United Alliance coalition government.
Political instability appears to have become a permanent feature in Meghalaya, which has seen four governments since the March 2008 assembly elections.
