Meghalaya bypoll on November 21

SHILLONG, Oct 23 - Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the bye-election of Nongstoin Assembly constituency in Meghalaya would be held on November 21.

The seat has remained vacant after Hill State Movement leader and senior politician, Hopingstone Lyngdoh of the Hill State People�s Democratic Party (HSPDP) passed away on September 26 this year.

The Election Commission said the Gazette Notification will be done on October 28. The last date of nomination will be November 4, followed by scrutiny of papers the next day.

The last date for withdrawal of candidature would be November 7. Counting would be held on November 24.

The Nongstoin seat has been a stronghold of HSPDP and the party is likely to retain the seat.

Durga puja concludes: The four-day Durga Puja celebrations came to a close today with Bijoya Dashami in which idols of Goddess Durga were immersed at Wahumkhrah stream at Polo here.

In the morning, women and men dressed in traditional outfits and jewellery visited the pandals and offered sweets and vermillion to the Goddess. Traditionally, text books are also taken to the Mother Goddess for her blessings.

On the occasion, people also greeted each other by hugging for a peaceful and prosperous year ahead and later in the evening visited each other�s households with sweets.

During the day, the idols from different pandals were carried on trucks to the Wahumkhrah. The serpentine processions of different Puja Committees from the State Capital were joined by thousands of people dancing and singing to the drum beats.

In the evening, holy water and aparajita (scared threads) were distributed at the different Puja pandals followed by cultural shows at several places.
