Meeting of traditional heads today

By Correspondent

SHILLONG, Sept 4 - The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has called a public meeting of traditional heads at the Polo Ground here on Saturday to dwell on various issues concerning the indigenous tribes.

The Council recently expressed its displeasure at the Meghalaya Governments move to draft a new Bill to empower the traditional institutions and heads. The State Government has withdrawn an Ordinance on the same subject, after opposition, and said it would frame a new Bill.

The Council is of the view that instead of a Bill framed by the State Government, the Village Administration Bill, which the Council has passed on the same subject be given approval by the Government.

It is expected a large number of traditional heads and other people will attend the rally. The meeting would also discuss the extension of the building bye-laws jurisdiction in scheduled areas.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has convened a meeting with leaders of all political parties on September 9 to discuss the draft Meghalaya Local Administration (Involvement of Traditional Institutions, Traditional Bodies and Headmen in Governance and Public Delivery System) Bill, 2015.
