By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, May 18 - The Guwahati Senior Citizens Association (GSCA) has requested all its members to identify the various civic problems including the condition of roads and drains, especially the sewerage system, and submit the same to the general secretary of the association in order to prepare a time-bound programme for improvement of the living condition of the citizens.

The association, at its meeting held today with DN Chakravartty in the chair, expressed concern at the degradation of the mindset of the political leaders of the State and the country, which had found nauseating manifestation in the scurrilous utterances of the political workers and leaders during the current poll campaign for the 17th Lok Sabha.

The association supported the resolution of the State committee (Assam Senior Citizens Association) for starting a welfare fund to render assistance to the elderly persons in their distress.

It also decided to observe April 10 as the foundation day of the Assam Senior Citizens Association. Uttam Baruah, Dr Devdas Bharali, Kabita Sarma, Mahendra Bora, Kula Ranjan Das, Bimal Hazarika, Hem Sarma and Buddhadev Goswami took part in the discussions and recited poems.

Baneswar Khound, general secretary of the association, welcomed the members and read out the proceedings of the last meeting.

Chakravartty, while formally releasing a book of poems titled Sristir Phool by Dr Runu Bhattacharya, narrated the contributions of Assamese woman writers from the days of Arunodoi including Padmavati Devi Phukanani, Swarnalata Baruah, Trailokeswari Devi Baruani, Bhubaneswari Devi Baruani, Raseswari Khataniar, Nalinibala Devi, Dr Nirmal Prabha Bardoloi and Dr Mamoni Raisom Goswami, and said that unlike in others languages of the world, in the Assamese language special literary ages had been christened after a single magazine such as Jonaki, Banhi, Awahan, Ramdhenu, Jayanti, Navajog and Usha.
