Meet to strengthen State women�s panel

GUWAHATI, Sept 16 - State�s Chief Secretary VK Pipersenia held a meeting on September 14 with Laldingliani Sailo, member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), who is on a four-day visit to Assam, and discussed the issues related to strengthening of the Assam State Commission for Women, said an official press release here today.

Sailo requested the Chief Secretary to enhance the budgetary support to the State Commission for Women, as well as to provide it additional technical manpower. Chief Secretary Pipersenia and the member of the National Commission for Women shared their concern over the plight of the flood-hit women of the State and the vulnerability of women during such situations. They also discussed issues related to sex-related crime, increased domestic violence, personal hygiene and other related issues.

Laldingliani Sailo also held a meeting with Meera Barooah, Chairperson of the Assam State Commission for Women, and Monidipa Borkotoki, Member-Secretary, and members Balika Lahon Pegu, Rajashri Baruah, Jolly Rajkhowa, Ranjan Phukan and Nilima Sarma. The Chairperson, the Member-Secretary and Members of the Meghalaya State Commission for Women were also present at the meeting.

The NCW and the State Commission are working on a report on the Socio-Economic and Political Status of Women in Assam, which is a part of the overall North-East report on empowerment of women. The report, proposed to be published in 2016 by the NCW will serve as a baseline survey for policy/programme recommendation, said the press release.
