Media passing through trying times: Assembly Speaker

By The Assam Tribune

GUWAHATI, Nov 14 - The media is passing through a crucial phase and journalists and editors have to now shoulder increasing responsibility in meeting the various challenges in a highly professional manner, Assam Legislative Assembly Speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami said here on Friday, according to a press release.

Releasing a book on media titled Sangbad Madhyam Aru Ahi Thoka Sangbadikotar Dhara written by veteran journalist and currently State Information Commissioner Samudra Gupta Kashyap, the Speaker appealed to the various stakeholders of a democratic setup to respect the freedom of media in the greater interest of the masses.

The media in India is passing through a crucial phase. The Constitution of India has given every citizen the right to freedom of expression. But while there have been instances of misuse of this freedom, incidents of attack on the media are also on the rise. All those who believe in democracy must also respect and appreciate the role of the media in upholding and strengthening democracy. Simultaneously, journalists should also keep in mind their responsibilities that come along with their rights while discharging their duties, Goswami said.

Speaking about his book, author Kashyap said he considered it a duty to give back to the profession and to society whatever he had learnt in his journalistic career spanning nearly four decades. It is a humble attempt to share particularly with the upcoming generation of journalists some of the interesting things which I had learnt as a journalist, he said.

The book is a collection of essays, articles and speeches of Kashyap written and delivered on various occasions in the past few years which provide an insight into various aspects of journalism.
