Media monitoring cell in Kamrup district

By Correspondent

MIRZA, March 12 - Ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, the Kamrup district administration has constituted a Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) to keep a watch on election-related news and features appearing in the print and electronic media. The measures are being taken based on the directions of the Election Commission of India to help curb paid news. In Kamrup, the MCMC was constituted with DC & DEO Vinod Seshan as Chairman, ADC Gita Sarmah and local journalist Madhusudhan Medhi as members and DIPRO Zahid Ahmed Tapadar as Member Secretary, official sources told this correspondent on Friday.

Sources said that the MCMC will be responsible for certification of advertisements, monitoring of paid news in print and electronic media and keeping records of all election-related news. The political parties, contesting candidates or their supporters will have to take permission before printing of pamphlets, posters, handbills etc., and publishing or airing political advertisement from this Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC).

The Committee members will verify advertisement contents sought to be published by political parties, contesting candidates or their supporters before releasing the same to the media. The Committee would also send reports to the Returning Officer to initiate action against violation of the Election Code of Conduct, sources added.
