By Staff reporter

GUWAHATI, July 12 The Mech Kachari organisations will jointly stage a sit-in demonstration at the Dispur Last Gate on July 17 in protest against the failure of the State Government to grant autonomy to the Mech Kacharis.

Disclosing this in a statement here today, Mech Kachari Jatiya Parishad, Assam said that other Mech Kachari organisations like the Mech Kachari Juva Parishad, Mech Kachari Mahila Parishad and Mech Kachari Autonomy Demand Committee in a joint meeting with the Jatiya Parishad on July 8 arrived at a decision to stage the said demonstration.

The failure of the Government to grant autonomy to the Mech Kacharis has made these organisations resentful and hence they have decided to stage the demonstration and raise several other demands besides the demand for granting autonomy to the ethnic group.

The other demands of the organisations include inclusion of a representative of the Mech Kacharis in the proposed Upper House of the State Legislature, proper census of the Mech Kachari population, preservation of the historical monuments built during the reigns of the Kachari kings.

Besides, they also demanded proper security to the Mech Kacharis and other peoples living in the interstate border areas of the State like Merapani, Doyang, Chungajan, scholarship to the Mech Kachari students and provision of hostels for them at places like Guwahati and district headquarter towns, recognition to the Mech Kacharis living in Karbi Anglong district as Scheduled Tribes of the Hills, among others.
