By STAFF CORRESPONDENT

SHILLONG, March 7 - Chief Minister Conrad Sangma today convened the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) governments first Cabinet meeting, assuring that the new government would take decisions based on merit regarding continuation or curtailment of schemes and programmes of the previous government.

Briefing the media after the Cabinet meeting, Sangma said all schemes of the previous government would be studied and those which have merit would be continued. On the other hand, schemes and programmes which are weak would be given the required impetus, he added.

Sangma said his government would try to be a government which thinks positively and do whatever is good for the people of the State. We will try to improve upon schemes and programmes of the previous government and will not criticise, the CM added.

He further informed that a committee has been set up with members from all the coalition partners so that a common minimum programme of the government could be chalked out at the earliest.

Stating that running a coalition is not easy and therefore, some of the issues that the coalition partners want reflected in the MDA governments common minimum programme would be given due consideration.

The government has also started discussions on the budget and all the officials have been asked to prepare the groundwork for the presentation of the first budget of the new government.
