GUWAHATI, Aug 9 - The Medical Council of India (MCI) has upheld the Delhi Medical Council (DMC) order against the two doctors involved in the alleged medical negligence case of the late Dr Anamika Ray.
Dr Ray, an assistant professor at GU and a renowned media educator of North East, underwent laparoscopic gall bladder surgery in 2015 after which she died. Her husband Ankuran Dutta filed a medical negligence case against the doctors, which was later confirmed by the investigation done by DMC at the order of the Delhi High Court.
The case was later examined by MCI at the appeal filed by Ankuran Dutta expressing dissatisfaction over the DMC order passed on June 16, 2017.
MCI through an order issued on July 27, 2019, upheld the DMC order to remove the two doctors involved in the medical negligence case from the state medical register of DMC for 15 days. �The ethical sub-committee of the Medical Council of India concluded that there is no infirmity in the order of the Delhi Medical Council and therefore, decided to uphold the order,� stated the issued order.
The Delhi Medical Council had ruled: �During the surgery, no ultrasound of the abdomen was done to confirm the diagnosis of acute cholecystitis, pre-anaesthetic check-up and preparation of the patient was not proper, there was no monitoring of airway pressure or ETCO2, operation theatre at the said hospital was not equipped to monitor end Tidal CO2, no cardiology consultation was sought immediately even though the patient suffered from a cardiac event, instead of admitting to the cardiac care unit (CCU), the patient was admitted in the surgical ICU and no autopsy was conducted.�
�There is poor documentation of the clinical progress of the patient in the case records, the pre-operative assessment and findings are insufficient,� MCI said.
Dr Ray was under treatment at Navjeevan Hospital, New Delhi and was later shifted to Jaipur Golden Hospital.
