Mayank finishes runner-up

GUWAHATI, Sept 23 - Mayank Chakraborty of Assam had to be content with a first runner-up finish in the 32nd National Under-9 Chess Championship which concluded today at Ranchi.

By the virtue of the runner-up finish, he sealed his berth in the Indian team that will participate in the Asian Under-10 and World Under-10 Chess Championship to be held next year.

Mayank, a Class IV student of South Point School in Barsapara here, scored nine points out of possible 11 and only lost to the champion AR Illamparthi of Tamil Nadu in the ninth round. The championship was organised by the All India Chess Federation and hosted by Jharkhand Chess Association from September 15 to 23.

Altogether 274 players from across the country participated in the open category while 151 girls participated in the championship. Sneha Halder of West Bengal emerged as the champion in the girls category.

Altogether 10 boys and one girl participated in this championship from Assam, stated a press release.
