Mattak royals for reservation of Assembly seats

By Our Bureau

DIBRUGARH, Feb 3 A fiercely independent and a once powerful community, the Mattaks of the State have demanded reservation of at least two Assembly segments Lahowal and Chabua for the community.

The royal family of the community has backed the demand, saying these two segments have a dense population of the Mattaks.

A member of the community, Bhaben Baruah of the AGP, was elected twice to the Assembly from Chabua, in 1985 and then in 1996. However, the Mattak Royal Society wants the Congress to nominate candidates from the community for Chabua and Lahowal.

The Mattak Royal Society, a group belonging to the heirs of the erstwhile Mattak kings, recently held a conference at Bogdung Bharalua village near Chabua.

It felt that the community had been neglected by the Congress for all these years since Independence and wanted the national parties to make amends.
