Massive torch rally by AASU, 30 bodies at North Lakhimpur

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 8 - The Lakhimpur district unit of the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) led a massive torch rally against the Citizenship Amendment Bill-2016 at North Lakhimpur this evening calling for scrapping of the bill and pledging to fight till death.

The protest march was joined by 30 other organisations, senior citizens and general public. A protest meeting was held near the A-Team field of North Lakhimpur Govt. HS School this evening in which a number of speakers called for the scrapping of the CAB terming it as a threat to the very fabric of Assamese identity, language and culture.

Police flag march: A flag march-cum-show of force along with area domination was arranged by Lakhimpur Police on Saturday to ensure control over law and order and peace in the district.

Lakhimpur SP Harekrishna Nath, along with ASPs Pranab Pegu, Santanu Dutta, DSP Runa Neog participated in the flag march convoy along with six sections each from CRPF and ITBP, two sections from CISF and personnel from district force. The rally set out from North Lakhimpur town to conduct area domination at Nowboicha, Laluk, Harmuty, Banderdewa, Narayanpur, Bihpuria, Charaimaria and Lilabari and then concluded at North Lakhimpur Police Reserve.

SP Harekrishna Nath asked people to maintain law and order and not to resort to violence. He also informed that currently the district had 500 CRPF and 400 State Arms force personnel to tackle any kind of situation.
