Massive fire breaks out at Fancy Bazar

By STAFF REPORTER

GUWAHATI, Dec 12 - A massive fire broke out in the fourth floor of the Rupayan building this morning in the Fancy Bazar area here, destroying goods worth a sizeable amount of money.

The fire, according to the State Fire and Emergency Services, engulfed nearly 14 garment shops and tailoring outlets before it was finally brought under control.

Firefighters had to employ the hydraulic platform to douse the inferno. However, no one was injured in the incident. The fire broke out at around 8.45 am.

It took almost two-and-half hours to douse the blaze, said a fireman.

Director General of Fire and Emergency Services AP Rout informed that as many as fifteen fire tenders had to be rushed to the spot after they got information about the fire.

To the advantage of the firefighting squad, water was locally sourced. This came handy for the firefighters today, Rout said, adding that the fire could be the result of a short-circuit, although nothing can be said for certain till the investigation is over.

Smokes started billowing from the building at around 8.30 am after which the fire service officials were informed, said an eyewitness.

This is not for the first time that massive fire had broken out in the congested Fancy Bazar area. Incidents of fire have become a regular affair in the area.

Poor adherence to fire safety norms continues to be a major reason behind such recurring incidents of fire, sources added.
