Mass anger, resentment against CAA sweeps Lakhimpur

NORTH LAKHIMPUR, Dec 16 - Spontaneous outburst of mass anger and resentment has been sweeping Lakhimpur district with protests against Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) intensifying in the State for the seventh day.

Today the AJYCP sat for a 36-hour hunger strike in protest against the CAA in front of the Deputy Commissioner�s Office, North Lakhimpur. The Lakhimpur district unit of the AJYCP sat for the hunger strike from morning today and it was joined by the common public. Multiple protest marches were taken out at various places of the town today against CAA drawing spontaneous participation from the public. Satyagraha marches were organised by the All Assam Students� Union (AASU) at Laluk and Harmutty today demanding the scrapping of the Act.

Earlier, on Sunday anti-CAA protest rallies were held across Lakhimpur district with large participation of the public. The Lakhimpur district AASU along with its North Lakhimpur unit conducted mass awareness drives against CAA at various naamghars of North Lakhimpur on Sunday. This was followed by street meetings and foot marches at various localities in and around the district headquarters. A huge anti-CAA protest meeting was also held at Bishnu Rabha Natyakala Mancha at Dollahat, Nowboicha.

In Dhakuakhana, the KMSS staged a 24-hour hunger strike in protest of CAA on Sunday. Similarly, a massive protest against CAA was held in the playground of Dhenukhonda High School, Dangdhora High School and in other places.

In Bihpuria, the members of Bihpuria and Narayanpur AGP staged a sit-in protest against CAA on Sunday. This was preceded by the resignation of all the 15 anchalik committees of AGP in North Lakhimpur on Friday. In Nowboicha AASU, AJYCP, ATTSA, AAGSU, AJM jointly organised a protest meeting. The ongoing anti-CAA movement has disrupted work on the Lower Subansiri Hydro Electrical Plant at Gerukamukh. The construction work at the site which was halted from December 9 to 15, resumed today.

Meanwhile, the Lakhimpur police has registered five cases in the district so far. Three of the cases have been registered at Dhakuakhana and one each at Ghilamora and North Lakhimpur.
