March in show of strength

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Dec 27 - The Guwahati City District Committee of the Congress party on Sunday staged a padyatra covering several localities of the Jalukbari Legislative Assembly constituency. The march was attended by hundreds of Congress workers, said a press statement.

The Congress activists shouted slogans against the policies of the NDA regime in the Centre. Flagging off the event at Baripara field at Maligaon, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee vice-president and former State minister Ripun Bora said that the Narendra Modi-led Government in Centre has failed on all fronts.

He alleged that the NDA regime has not been able to fulfil any of the promises made by it to the electorate of the country.

Bora said that people have lost faith in the BJP and this has been proved by the reverses suffered by the saffron party in the Assembly elections in Bihar and Delhi and in the panchayat polls in Gujarat.

He said that BJPs dream of forming the State Government in Assam in the next Assembly elections will not be fulfilled and added that Himanta Biswa Sarma will himself lose from the Jalukbari constituency.

The march was attended by a number of senior Congress leaders. The Sundays event assumes significance due to the fact that many Congress workers in the Jalukbari constituency had left the party and joined the BJP during recent months following the defection of Sarma.

The Congress is keen to make its presence felt in the constituency, which is among the most high-profile ones in the Assembly.
