Maoists abduct two Italian tourists

By The Assam Tribune

BHUBANESWAR, March 18 Maoists abducted two Italian tourists from the tribal-dominated Kandhamal-Ganjam region in Odisha asking for a halt to the combing operation against them by this evening and fulfilment of 12 other demands, prompting the state government to launch a crisis management exercise, reports PTI.

Confirming the abduction of the Italians last night, state Home Secretary U N Behera and DGP Manmohan Praharaj said they had been taken hostage by rebels from the Kandhamal-Ganjam border area.

However, the government was yet to receive any direct communication from the kidnappers, the officials said.

With the Maoist deadline approaching, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik took stock of the situation at a meeting with Chief Secretary B K Patnaik and other top officials.
