Mantu, Radhika named best athletes

GUWAHATI, May 3 � Mantu Sahu of Tezpur and Radhika Rajbor of Guwahati were adjudged best athletes in the men�s and women�s sections respectively in the 35th Senior and Junior Inter District Athletic Championship.

Mantu won gold in 800m and 1500m, while Radhika bagged gold in 1500m and 3000m respectively.

The championship, staged for the first time on synthetic track, came to an end today at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium, Sarusajai here.

Tinsukia emerged as best team winning 21 gold, 11 silver and 7 bronze medals. Guwahati, with 14 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze medals came second, while Assam Police stood third winning 10 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medals. Kokrajhar, NF Railway and Nalbari were placed in fourth, fifth and sixth spots respectively.

Altogether 71 gold medals were at stake in the meet where 655 athletes from 33 districts took part. The four-day championship was organised by the Assam Athletic Association (AAA).

The individual best athlete award winners were � Boys U-14 Mridul Sarma (Nalbari), girls U-14 Nibedita Barman (Nalbari), boys U-16 Failao Daimary (Kokrajhar), girls U-16 Himakshi Kalita (Nalbari), boys U-18 Mithija Boro (Guwahati), girls U-18 Kiranmoyee Moran (Tinsukia), boys U-20 Papu Mahanta (Tinsukia), girls U-20 Tilumoni Saikia (Tinsukia), men Suraj Gogoi (Assam Police), women Dipti Chutia (Assam Police).

Suraj also set new State record in the long jump event with a leap of 7.22 metres.

The closing function was attended by State Forest and Tourism Minister and president of AAA Rockybul Hussain as chief guest. He also awarded Rs 5,000 each to Mantu and Radhika. Speaking on the occasion, Hussain lauded the districts for sending large number of athletes for the State meet and talents have been spotted in this championship.
