Manipur University reopens after 85 days

By CORRESPONDENT

IMPHAL, Aug 23 - The Manipur University formally reopened today following the temporary suspension of a 85-day shutdown announced on Wednesday.

Students and teachers turned up at the varsity campus at Canchipur, about 7 km from here, this morning to resume their academic activities.

Though some of the departments resumed their classes, the university authorities are yet to make any announcement on rescheduling the suspended semester examinations of around 32 departments.

Some university students, including PG students of the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences, who came to collect their certificates went back empty-handed as the things are still to be in order.

On Wednesday, the Manipur University community announced a temporary suspension of its shutdown after the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development approved of a Memorandum of Agreement signed among the varsity community, the HRD Ministry and the State Government on August 16.

However, the president of the Manipur University Students Union (MUSU) said that the university community would stick to their demand for removal of Vice Chancellor Adya Prasad Pandey.

The MUSU launched an indefinite shutdown on May 30, demanding Pandeys ouster of Pandey on charges of financial and administrative irregularities.
