Manipur to witness first-ever bonsai workshop

Imphal, March 22: In a move to revive the art of Bonsai in the state, the first ever workshop on arts of Bonsai will be held at Youth hostel in Imphal from March 28 to 29.

The two day-long first Bonsai workshop in the state was conceived by Horticulturist and Assistant Professor Dr Senjam Jinus from FGI,College of Agricultural Sciences, Hengbung under the guidance of Homen Kangjam. It was supported by Dr Santosh Thoudam from United Scientific Rural Development Association, Mayang Imphal.

Even though Dr Jinus does not have much background on the arts of Bonsai,he has a passion for bonsai practices and decided to conduct a workshop in order to revive the so called bed ridden art and to encourage all.

The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation for the viewer, and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity for the grower. The bonsai is not intended for production of food or for medicine. Instead, bonsai practice focuses on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees growing in a container.

The workshop will provide bonsai enthusiasts and beginners the opportunity to enhance the skill, learn and refine their bonsai arts by offering high-quality bonsai demonstration and hands-on practical in an encouraging and professional atmosphere with various well known bonsai enthusiasts of Manipur, according to the organisers.

During the inaugural session of the workshop, Dr Senjam Jinus will make a presentation on "science behind the bonsai". The eminent bonsai artists will interact with the participants.

Various unique bonsai and its tools and implements will also be during the event. At the end of the program, every participant will be distributed with some bonsai material like bonsai pot, pre bonsai plant and some certificate to encourage the participants.
