Manipur to enact strict law to curb drug menace

IMPHAL, May 11 � Manipur Cabinet today resolved to enact strict laws to control the menace of drug trafficking in the State.

A bill is likely to be introduced in the forthcoming Assembly session to enact a new law. The Cabinet also approved holding of the budget session of the assembly from June 10 next, according to government spokesman and Education Minister Moirangthem Okendra.

The Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Ibobi Singh last evening also decided to hand over the case of seizure of drug worth around Rs 3.64 crore from Manipur Police Commandos on April 28 last, to Central Bureau of Investigation for probe.

The meeting also resolved to increase the salary of part time Lecturers working in Government colleges from Rs 8,000 to Rs 21,600. The increment will be made effective for the 355 Grade �A� Part Time Lecturers. The salary of another 53 guest lecturers would also be increased to Rs 21,600 to be effective from April last, he added. The hike in the salary of Village Defence Force (VDF) personnel by Rs 1,000 from their earlier salary of Rs 3,000 was also approved. There are about 10,000 VDF personnel in the State.
