Manipur police nabs 3 in molestation case

IMPHAL, Dec 26 � Manipur police have rounded up three youths who were allegedly involved in molesting a girl at Napetpali area under Lamlai police station in Imphal East district.

A delayed report said three unidentified youths waylaid 13 tribal students including seven girls while they were returning from Imphal on foot to their villages to attend the Christmas festival. The three youths also looted cash of Rs 2500, seven mobile handsets and one ipod from the group.

Speaking to media, one of the students � Tampakwon alleged that one of the unidentified youths who claimed himself as a KCP (Kangleipak Communist Party) member separated the boys and girls.

Later, the youth molested one of the girls, he alleged. When the girl shouted for help, the womenfolk of the nearby Nongren village came out and rescued the girl, he added.

Meanwhile, in a swift police action, the trio have been rounded up and remanded in police custody for further questioning.

Protesting the incident and demanding justice into the incident, womenfolk of 10 villages under Saikul division in Senapati district staged a sit-in demonstration at Leishipung hill village, about 30 km east of Imphal this afternoon.

Manipur bandh: A joint meeting of civil society organiations and film bodies here decided to resume the indefinite general strike to protest the alleged molestation of Manipuri actress Momoko by a cadre of NSCN-IM from midnight tonight till 6 pm of December 27.

The administration also acted swiftly announcing clamping of curfew from 6 am to 6 pm tomorrow.

The meeting also decided to stage various forms of agitations by holding sit-in demonstrations, public rallies even after the strike concludes.
