Manipur minister feted for receiving degree from foreign varsity

IMPHAL, Dec 29 - Manipur Education, Labour and Employment Minister Thokchom Radheshyam Singh was felicitated on Friday for receiving a honorary degree of Doctorate of Science in Political Science conferred by the European University of Brcko District (EUBO) of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Organised by the Department of Education along with the Manipur International University, the felicitation ceremony was held at the Manipur State Film Development Society precincts here.

The honorary degree was awarded to Radheshyam by Chancellor Dr Nedeljko Stankovic at the city of Belgrade in Serbia on December 6.

Speaking on the occasion, former Vice Chancellor of Manipur University Prof H Nandakumar Sarma said that it was a moment of pride that such a prestigious degree has been conferred on a person from Manipur. Lauding the works of Radheshyam as the Education Minister, he said that perceptive improvement and changes have been visible in the school and higher education sectors.

Prof Nandakumar also stated that many colleges have been converted into government colleges, including the two women�s colleges � S Kula Women�s College and Waikhom Mani Girls� College.

Among the Indian States, Manipur stands at 16th position in the literacy rate as per Census 2011. This ranking needs to be improved in the next census, Prof Nandakumar stressed.

Radheshyam, in his speech, shared the experience of his short stint in Bosnia and Herzegovina serving as the Regional Chief of Human Rights in the United Nations� Mission in 2001-2002. He said that education enables a person to inculcate tolerance, respect and appreciation for the rich diversity of different cultures.

Commissioner, Education (S), T Ranjit Singh, Chancellor of Manipur International University Dr Harikumar Palathadka, other officials of the Department of Education, principals and teachers attended the felicitation programme.
