IMPHAL, May 20 - Lawyers in Manipur staged a sit-in protest in front of Imphal Cheirap Court Complex on Monday to register a strong protest against the vandalism inside a court complex here and assault of one of their colleagues.

On May 18, a group of agitators under the banner of Joint Action Committee (JAC) formed in connection with murder of one Kh Arun stormed the Lamphel court complex where the court of Imphal East chief judicial magistrate is also located.

The mob not only ransacked property of the court complex, but also allegedly assaulted a lawyer, a member of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA).

Eleven women allegedly involved in the vandalism were arrested by the police. They are currently in the custody of Lamphel police station after a local court remanded them to custody for four days.

Registering a strong protest against the incident as well as frequent incidents of mob violence witnessed in the court complexes in Imphal, members of AMBA and High Court Bar Association (HCBA) jointly staged the sit-in protest.
