IMPHAL, Jan 11 Manipur today launched the 25th Road Safety Week by holding a symbolic motorcycle rally.

Various activities such as mass campaign, awareness campaign, panel discussion and others will be the main highlights of the Road Safety Week celebration, State Transport and PWD Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar said while flagging off the motorcycle rally at the Old Secretariat Gate here today.

Around 50 bikers from the Royal Riders Manipur (RRM) and nine Imphal West Traffic Police bikers participated in the bike rally which covered all the four valley districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal and Bishnupur.

The Minister said, The State Government has begun to widen the important roads in and around Imphal city to control the rising traffic volume.

The existing traffic volume in Imphal is one of the main factors for the rising road accidents in the State. In some highly populated area of the Bazar area, the road widening has been taken to 100 feet and in some less populated area up to 150 feet, he added.

Manipur is among the States with high occurrence of road accidents. As many as 746 people were killed in 3,216 road accidents during the last five years in the State.
