Manipur Inter-State borders to be sealed: CEC

IMPHAL, Jan 5 � Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) SR Quraishi today said that inter-State borders with Manipur will be sealed besides other precautionary measures on Indo-Myanmar border to prevent entry of anti-social elements in view of the forthcoming Assembly polls on January 28.

Briefing mediapersons, soon after a series of meetings with political parties, State officials and inter-State officials separately here at the old Secretariat conference hall this afternoon, the CEC said ,�We want a peaceful, free and fair election in the State.�

The visiting CEC, responding to a question on the porous Indo-Myanmar border, said that they�ll be calling a meeting in Delhi in this regard soon besides asking the authority to double up the security coverage. At present, Assam Rifles has been guarding the 380-km-long Indo-Myanmar border.

The CEC also informed that the meeting decided to instruct the Indian Oil Corporation officials to provide a dedicated petrol pump for the election proposes.

Admitting that there are complaints of ministers and MLAs misusing the government vehicles, he also appealed to the parties to observe the election code of conduct. He informed that the process of making photo identity cards for the electorates will be completed within 10 days time. Photography will be done at all polling booths, he added.

The visiting ECI official reacting to another question on militants� ban on Congress party in the election, assured that there will be adequate forces once the special trains engaged for the forthcoming election transported the paramilitary forces from Uttar Pradesh. The State will be utilizing 350 companies of Central paramilitary forces for the election.
