Manipur House premises declared �plastic free zone�

IMPHAL, June 1 - Manipur Assembly premises have been announced as �plastic free zone�. The ban on plastic and polythene in the premises of New Assembly complex at Chingmeirong, Old Assembly complex near Indira Park and Assembly guest house at Majorkhul came into effect from Friday.

As per the order issued by Manipur Assembly secretary, M Ramani Devi on Thursday, Speaker of Manipur Assembly has declared the premises of Assembly Secretariat as �Plastic Free Zone.�

Speaking to a news channel, Speaker Yumnam Khemchand has appealed to all to shun use of plastics and concentrate on tree plantation activities.

Ahead of World Environment Day on June 5, Union Environment Ministry has banned plastic in all protected areas around the country, thus declaring them �plastic free zones�. It has also directed States and Union Territories to organise awareness campaigns to sensitise people about the issue.
