Manipur House condemns Punjab MLAs remark

By Sobhapati Samom

IMPHAL, July 7 The recent remarks of a Punjab Congress MLA that stray dogs be sent to North East for whatever they do to them as a way to tackle the growing menace of these canines, has evoked sharp reaction from the Manipur Assembly.

The on-going Manipur Assembly session on Friday resolved to send a letter of condemnation to the Speaker of Punjab Assembly.

Taking strong exception to the said remark, Trinamool Congress leader Dr I Ibohalbi raised a call attention motion in the Assembly. Responding to the call attention motion, Speaker Th Lokeshwor said a letter of condemnation would be sent to his Punjab counterpart after the Manipur House unanimously condemned the remark of Punjab legislator.

Earlier raising the motion, opposition MLA Ibohalbi said that he was compelled to raise the issue as the remarks had hurt sentiments of the people of NE. He added that it would be appropriate for the House to take a resolution and dispatch the same to the Speaker of Punjab Assembly so as to make the MLA in question realizse his misconduct. Such derogatory remarks have only reaffirmed the discriminatory attitude towards the North East people, the opposition leader felt.

Such unparliamentary remark from an elected member is unfortunate, President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee observed.

Federation of Indian Animal Protection Organisation, Nationalist Congress Party Meghalaya unit and BJP Nagaland unit, BJPs North East India Sampark Cell and its Manipur Pradesh unit have also condemned the reported derogatory and uncalled for remarks made by the Punjab MLA.
