Manipur hospital carries out kidney transplant

IMPHAL, Aug 21 - Doctors of Shija Institute of Renal Sciences, a unit of Shija Hospitals and Research Institute (SHRI) in Manipur have successfully performed the first-ever kidney transplantation surgery in the State, according to CMD of SHRI Dr Khundongbam Palin.

Manipur is the second State in NE to carry out a kidney transplant after Guwahati in Assam.

The successful operation was conducted on the eve of country�s Independence Day celebration on a 29 year-old patient from Bishnupur district headquarters, who was suffering from chronic renal failure and steroid induced diabetes mellitus since 2013.

The transplant was carried out by a doctor�s team comprising Nephrologist Dr P Guliver and Consultant Urologist and Renal Transplant Surgeon Dr Somorendro Paonam besides Dr Sananda Bag, Senior Consultant Urologist and Renal Transplant Surgeon, Yasoda Hospitals, Hyderabad.

Dr Palin said every year many patients go outside the State for kidney transplant operations spending huge amount of money and time. Now, the same facilities are available in the State which will help many of the patients, he added.

According to reports almost 2,20,000 people require kidney transplantation in India. Against this, approximately 7,500 kidney transplantation are performed at 250 kidney transplant centres in India.
