Manipur Guv passes away

IMPHAL, Sept 27 - Manipur Governor Dr Syed Ahmed passed away at Lilavati Hospital in Mumbai on Sunday. The 70-year-old former Congress leader, who was sworn-in as Governor of Manipur on May 16 last, is survived by two daughters and a son.

He was admitted to the hospital a week ago for treatment of cancer. He passed away at around 12.45 pm on Sunday, according to Raj Bhavan sources here.

Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh condoled the sudden demise of Dr Ahmed. �I am deeply shocked to hear of the sudden demise of Governor Dr Syed Ahmed�, said Ibobi. �On his demise we have lost a great leader, an eminent social activist and his absence will be felt dearly by each one of us.�

�I on behalf of the people of Manipur convey heartfelt condolences to you and your family members. May his soul rest in peace,� he added in a condolence message to First lady Syed Hasan Tara. Governor of Maharashtra, Ch Vidyasagar Rao, has also expressed grief over Dr Ahmed�s demise.

Dr Ahmed had served as a Minister in the Maharashtra Government from 2001 to 2004. He was elected to the Maharashtra Assembly five times from Nagpada constituency between 1980 and 2004.

PTI adds from Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Governor JP Rajkhowa today expressed shock and grief at the sudden demise of his Manipur counterpart Dr Ahmed in Mumbai.

Condoling the death, Rajkhowa said Dr Ahmed was a distinguished and veteran politician, who will be remembered for his contribution towards education, culture and environment as Minister of State in Maharashtra and Chairman of State Haj Committee. He had authored many Urdu books of literary and historical relevance, a Raj Bhawan communique said.
