Manipur Govt moots mobile teams to patrol national highways

IMPHAL, Feb 5: The Manipur Government plans to deploy foolproof mobile security teams covering stretches of 5-10 km on the national highways to prevent frequent disturbance to movement of goods carriers by antisocial elements.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh stated this while responding to Opposition MLA Kh Joykishan’s call attention motion on reported collection of taxes by antisocial elements on the NH-37 (Imphal-Jiribam highway).

Stating that the Government is committed to maintaining law and order including checking such incidents of tax collection by unidentified persons along the highways, Biren Singh said that commando and security teams would be stationed at vulnerable areas as well.

Commenting on the reported incident on the intervening night of January 31 and February 1 at Nungba area along the Imphal-Jiribam highway, the Chief Minister stated that a cement-laden truck belonging to a construction company was reportedly pushed down a gorge by some unidentified persons involved in illegal collection of taxes.

An FIR has already been registered in this regard and efforts are on to arrest the culprits involved in the incident, he said. The Chief Minister added that an additional SP is leading a police team to conduct necessary operations in this regard.

Earlier, MLA Joykishan informed the House that around 10 vehicles were looted by unidentified miscreants along the highway this morning.
