�Manipur Govt committed to save environment�

IMPHAL, April 12 - Manipur Forest and Environment Minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar on Thursday said the Forest department has earmarked Rs 25 crore for sapling plantation in various areas of the State in the current financial year.

Speaking to media here, Shyamkumar said Chief Minister N Biren Singh-led government is committed and determined to save the environment and wildlife of the State.

Informing that the department has collected royalty from different Central projects undertaken in the State and deposited Rs 250 crore in the State Account under the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Management and Planning Authority (CAMPA) for rejuvenation purpose.

Clarifying that Forest department has not banned the use of forest products by the locals, he said that the trees should be cut legally following the rules and guidelines of the Indian Forest Act and Manipur Forest Act so that the environment is not disturbed.

Informing that Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC) is handling the plantation, harvesting and cutting of trees, he appealed to the people to cut trees only after getting JFMC clearance.
