Manipur erupt with joy for Mary

IMPHAL, Aug 6 � Manipur erupted in joy this evening when MC Mary Kom made history as she assured India its fourth Olympic medal after winning a quarter final boxing bout against Maroua Rahali of Tunisia by a margin of 15-6 in the women�s 51 kg category in London. Manipur Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh also lauded Mary Kom�s success in the Games.

Sports lovers in Manipur came out on streets and burnt firecrackers to celebrate Mary Kom�s win. �We�re really proud of her winning the match to seal a medal. We�re also expecting a similar move from boxer Devendra,� Ch Boycha, a boxing fan in Imphal said.

L Devendra, another boxer from Manipur, also made his way emphatically into the last 8 of the 49-kg class after defeating his opponent Serdamba Purevdorj of Mongolia.

President L Dina Kom of Komrem Baptist Churches Association whose team have been praying for Mary�s success prior to the games said, �We�re happy and really excited as the bout is being watched in every village in the State. We�ve been praying for her to shine for the glory of God and our nation. God will answer our prayer.�

Sharing his sentiment over five times world champion�s success in the day�s quarter final bout, Mary�s local coach in Imphal Laishram Kishan said, �Chances are very high for her to win the gold if she continues to maintain her determination which was reflected in the day�s performance.�

Twenty-nine-year-old mother of twin boys, May Kom who belongs to Kom community in Manipur, also become the first Indian woman boxer to enter the semifinal of an Olympic Games and the third Indian woman after Karnam Malleswari and Saina Nehwal to win an Olympic medal.
