Manipur CM launches copter service

IMPHAL, Sept 19 - Manipur Government would look into the feasibility of launching Barak River Waterways project in consultation with Assam Government.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh disclosed this while addressing the formal launching function of the State�s first-ever helicopter service between Imphal and Jiribam at Jiribam town, about 222 km from here, on Wednesday.

Asking the people not to panic about the identification verification drive at Jiribam, the CM said that there is no ban on entry of any person, who possesses valid documents, to Manipur.

Stating that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had approved over Rs 25,000 crore for construction of roads in the State, he said that work order for the construction of Jiri-Tipaimukh road had been issued to National Highway Infrastructure Development Ltd.

Regarding the helicopter service, he said this is a great moment for the State. The government is also planning to introduce helicopter service from Imphal to Moreh, Churachandpur, etc., he added.

During his maiden visit to Jiribam, he also inaugurated a women market shed apart from laying foundation stone for government transit quarters for officers.

Noida-based Pawan Hans Ltd which deployed helicopters in six NE States for passenger services, medical evacuation and VIP transportation, is providing the helicopter services with an eight-seater chopper in Manipur.

The helicopter service between Imphal-Jiribam-Imphal will operate daily except Sunday and public holidays. The flying time is around 30-40 minutes. Passenger service vehicles take nearly 10 hours to reach Imphal from Jiribam.

Deputy Chief Minister Y Joykumar, several Ministers and high ranking officials of the State Government were also present in the function.
