PUDUCHERRY, Dec 25 (PTI): Manipur pugilists reigned havoc in the rings in final day of the third Inter-Zonal Senior Women Boxing Championship, bagging as many as four gold medals to finish runners-up in the tournament here last night.
It all started with reigning Asian and former world flyweight champion L Sarita Devis gold medal. The 29-year-old veteran boxer was at her best as she thrashed Poonam of North Zone by a whopping 35:9 margin to finally lay her hand on the Inter-zonal title.
Following in Saritas footsteps, another Manipur boxer Sarjubala Devi claimed the Zonal Crown in the light flyweight division.
Youth World champion Sarjubala claimed her second title in the domestic circuit after the senior National Championships, with a thumping 35:6 victory over Neetu of Haryana.
Former youth National champion and 12th Senior Nationals silver medallist E Memthoi Devi and bronze medallist at senior nationals M Meena Kumari, all from Manipur, also displayed brilliant skills in their respective weight categories to register to claim the yellow metal.
Memthoi defeated Seema of West Zone 17:6 on points, while Meena got the better of Central Zones Sarika Kumari 20:5.
However, the four yellow metals were not enough for Manipur to claim the top honours in the team category and had to set settle with the runners up trophy.
