Man falls into lift pit of hospital, dies

SILCHAR, Nov 7 - A 72-year-old man Kabindra Das died after he accidentally fell into the lift pit of the South City Hospital here on Friday midnight. The family members have accused the hospital staff for negligence in keeping the lift without any operator. The deceased was a resident of Meherpur Shivalik Park close to the hospital.

In the words of Sandip Saha, the manager of the hospital who was on duty, the incident occurred around 2:30 at night when the hospital staff heard a noise and one of the patient�s attendants was seen running down from the third floor down towards the lift. After a while, the attendants and others saw a body lying in the basement. Later, the family members identified the body. It is to be mentioned that Kabindra was accompanied in the hospital by his son Prajesh Das and son-in-law Jantu Das.

Kalpana Das, daughter of the deceased said that her father was admitted to the hospital on Friday evening after he had complained of chest pain due to cough. He was being treated by Dr SR Bhattacharjee, Kalpana said. �It is because of the negligence of the hospital management, we lost our father. The hospital staff did not even notice that he had fallen into the lift pit,� Kalpana said.

Interestingly, there have been allegations against the hospital management of ignoring the condition of the lift.

Meanwhile, N Majumder, the managing director of the hospital maintained that the accident was unfortunate and they would cooperate with the police in the investigation. �We are saddened at the unfortunate accident. The moment I was informed about the incident, I rushed to the hospital and informed the police. My sympathies are with the bereaved family of the patient. We will extend cooperation to the police during investigation.�

Police said that they will examine the CCTV footage for getting the exact picture behind the incident.
