Man convicted

By CORRESPONDENT

AIZAWL, March 12 - A district court at Champhai on Wednesday convicted a 26-year-old man for possessing heroin, six years after he was arrested with the contraband.

Champhai Special Court Judge R Valalena sentenced Malsawmdawngkima, a resident of Champhai, to rigorous imprisonment for eight years and also slapped a fine of Rs 50,000 on him. He will have to undergo imprisonment for another six months if he fails to pay the fine.

Malsawmdawngkima was arrested with 10 hawng (about 138 grams) of heroin while travelling in a mini bus from Zokhawthar on the Indo-Myanmar border to Champhai on November 27, 2014, by Champhai district excise and narcotics staff during a routine checking.

He told police that the drug belonged to his mother-in-law, who asked him to fetch it from Zokhawthar. The court did not find it necessary to verify his claim as possessing heroin without obtaining permission from the appropriate authorities itself is punishable under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.

The case had dragged on for long as the accused had gone missing and some of the witnesses had been transferred to other districts.
