Make dam benefits public: BJP

By Staff Reporter

GUWAHATI, Feb 15 The State unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) today dared the State Government to make public the benefits Assam will derive from the mega-dam hydel projects through the print media. It has also urged the State Government to dare to think independently coming out from the clutches of the Central Government and the mega-dam lobby, in the greater interest of the States people.

In a statement here, State BJP spokesman Shantanu Bharali asserted that the Congress Government at the Centre has been hatching a plot to handover each and every resources of the State to others. And Chief Minister of the State is leading this scheme. This is the reason as to why the Central Government has been hushing up the reports of the UNESCO on the apprehensions they expressed about the adverse impacts of the mega dam projects on the Kaziranga and Manas National Parks of the State.

The UNESCO in its June 29, 2011 report asked the Central Government not to proceed with the mega dam projects unless their downstream impacts are properly studied. In November that year the UNESCO again warned the Central Government against the mega dam projects and called for steps to keep the works on executing the mega dam projects in abeyance for the sake of the two National Parks.

Bharali said, quoting media reports, the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in its 35 th sitting held between June 19 and 29, 2011 in Paris, prepared a list of 12 World Heritage Sites facing threats from the hydel projects. Kaziranga and Manas National Parks were two of these World Heritage Sites.
